It’s not going particularly well for Sony at the moment and things continue to worsen after images appearing to show its next flagship smartphone made their way onto the web, courtesy of a Mr Bond.
A mirror smartphone
According to Gizmodo images of the Sony Xperia Z4 were found in the hacked emails of Sony CEO Michael Lynton, relating to the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre.
The images are said to be part of a wider product placement pitch for the movie, and the renders show a handset with the tag line „The Elemental“ and „Xperia Z fourth generation.“
That fourth generation line is a little odd, as technically the Z4 will be the fifth ‚Z‘ smartphone after the Xperia Z, Z1, Z2 and recent Z3.
In George Leon’s (Sony’s Executive VP of Consumer Marketing) email to Lynton he says: „Sony Mobile has now provided us with the needed visuals of the new Z4 phones.
„These phones are the planned phones for May/November of 2015. I’m attaching the visual for you to see.“
We’d expect the Xperia Z4 then to launch in May, with variants – potentially including a Xperia Z4 Compact – to arrive later on in November, although this isn’t clear from the leak.
Picture annotations reveal a mirrored front and back to the handset, while Sony’s prominent power/lock key remains on the right side of the handset along with the volume rocker and physical camera button.
If all that wasn’t enough, it looks like Sony has a new smartband in the works too as another image shows a wearable device not that dissimilar to the Nike Fuelband.
There’s no further information on this product, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for it at CES 2015 and MWC 2015.
